3rd Generation Toyota Prius With Hybrid Synergy Drive.

    2010 Toyota Prius

The new third generation Toyota Prius is rated at 50mpg, but its sales may not be exceedingly spectacular during these (temporary) times of low oil prices. Prius sales dropped 45% in the end of 2008, and things are so bad across the product range that they’ve announced that they’re suspending all vehicle production in all 12 Japanese plants for 11 days over February and March.

Even if oil prices don’t rise in the near future, Toyota is hoping for the whole “greening” of America to boost Prius sales, fueled by demand from environmentally-conscious buyers, as long as they don’t find out how damaging to the environment the production of a Prius is, despite the Prius itself being a greener car than a regular sedan or hatchback.

    2010 Toyota Prius

Toyota says the new Prius is roomier, quieter, more advanced and has more equipment. It even has a moonroof equipped with a solar panel located over the rear seating area. As previously speculated, the solar panels only powers the air circulation fan for the air conditioning system, not even the whole air conditioning system! This fan can function while the car is unoccupied, which means it can keep the car’s interior cool while it is parked under the hot sun.

    2010 Toyota Prius

As for styling, the original shape has been retained since it has become iconic, defining what a hybrid should look like so much that even Honda was “inspired” by it for the new second generation Honda Insight. But it is larger, with the original shape stretched and moulded to its new proportions. The front headlamps have a unique shape to them, okay maybe not exactly unique, we recently saw the exact same thing on the new Nissan 370Z!

    2010 Toyota Prius

The Atkinson cycle engine under the hood is now larger and more powerful, clocking in at 1.8 liters on the displacement scale and putting out 98 horsepower at 5,200rpm and 142Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The electric motor puts out 80hp and 208Nm of torque, but combined output of the two systems are 134 horsepower. Power from the two “engines” go through an electronically controlled CVT transmission. The hybrid battery pack is still a NiMH (no move to lithium ion yet). The Prius can run in 3 modes - EV, Eco and Power. EV is an electric-only mode (which can run for about 1.6km, good for short trips to the shop or mamak), while Eco and Power should be self explanatory.

    2010 Toyota Prius

There are a few engineering improvements in the new Prius over the old one, especially in teh area of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The transaxle is now lighter and reduces torque losses by as much as 20%. The inverter has a new direct cooling system which results in a smaller size and lighter weight. A new brake energy regeneration system has also been fitted. The system also uses exhaust gas heat to help warm up the engine during startup for improved emissions and performance. This exhaust gas heat is also used to heat up the passenger cabin more efficiently. The body uses aluminium in the hood, rear hatch, front suspension axle and brake caliper to reduce weight.

Volvo SC90 concept was panned by Nouphone J. Bansasine.

    Volvo SC90 Concept

The Volvo SC90 concept was panned by Nouphone J. Bansasine during his internship at Volvo in Summer 2007, and it was essentially a Volvo entry into the fray of “4-door coupes” being launched one after another by nearly all car manufacturers who ever use the word luxury in any of their marketing material.

In the designer’s imaginary world, the SC90 concept would go into production by the year 2015 against the Aston Martin Rapide and the Porsche Panamera, and according to current Volvo nomenclature it would most likely be called the Volvo C90. Perhaps it’s because it would probably take that long for anyone to find a Volvo entry in THAT segment sexy enough to purchase - 4-door coupes aren’t as practical as sedans and are usually a purely emotional choice.

Lexus HS 250h Detroit Auto Show Unveiling Video.

    Lexus HS 250h

Essentially what you could consider a hybrid version of the Toyota Avensis, the newLexus HS 250h is not exactly a dedicated hybrid version by that definition but in the Lexus line-up it does come only with a hybrid powertrain, which is what Lexus means by a “dedicated hybrid vehicle”. It is powered by the 2.4 liter Atkinson cycle combustion engine and electric motor hybrid system from the Camry Hybrid. This is vehicle platform and powertrain sharing at it’s best, one that rivals the Volkswagen Group’s. We’ve previously already taken a look at the HS 250h but for the 99.9% of us that did not get to witness the HS 250h’s unveiling at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, here’s the official launch video from Detroit, along with new photos.

New 2009 Ford Focus Rs.

    Ford Focus RS

Ford has revealed more information on the powerplant in the Ford Focus RS engine bay. The inline-5 “Duratec RS” engine puts out 305 PS between 6,500rpm to 7,050rpm (redline) and a massive 440Nm of torque between 2,300 and 4,500rpm, a good 40Nm more at the peak than the BMW M3. I believe one of the intentions of the press release are to dispel any talk that Ford simply took the easy way out and “rechipped” the Duratec ST engine to produce more power, as many had expected something more exciting such as maybe a twin turbo version with all-wheel drive.

“There was never an intention to try to ‘chip’ the ST engine. We evaluated several approaches using the ST engine and none gave us the combination of power delivery, character and durability that we wanted, so we opted to create an RS Duratec, using the ST unit as our base,” said Ford Team RS powertrain manager Len Urwin.

    Ford Focus RS Engine

The engine gets a revised cylinder head gasket, metal-sprayed cylinder bores that are more durable, new pistons and a bespoke camshaft profile and conrods which allows bigger small-end bearings. The turbo has been uprated to a Borg Warner K16 that peaks out at 1.4 bar, double that of the Focus ST’s 0.7 bar boost. Ford says the turbo size was carefully picked to match the “bottom end responsiveness” of the Focus ST. The integration of the turbo to the exhaust manifold had to be strategically configured to optimise crash performance and minimize revisions to other components such as exhaust system, and oil and water pipes. It also has to take into account the car’s 20mm lower subframe. The engine’s larger intercooler can reduce air temperatures from 160 degrees Celsius at the compressor, to a maximum of 60 degrees Celsius at the intercooler outlet, in ambient temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius.

Urwin adds that Ford wanted to prevent the engine from feeling like it runs out of steam at the top end, something that turbo-ed engines with very flat torque curves sometimes exhibit. There is just so much of rush right from the start that you don’t feel the momentum of things picking up all the way until the end. Ford wanted to “reward” drivers who took the Duratec RS to the redline. In addition, the car’s rev needles can bounce up to 7,050rpm for about 3 seconds before it is rev-limited to 6,500rpm.

    Ford Focus RS

The 6-speed manual shares the same ratios as the Focus ST but has modifications to the bearing and clutch housing as well as had its differential strengthened to take the extra power and torque. The overall gearing is 1% longer than the ST thanks to the car’s larger tyres (larger rolling circumference), and this results in the RS being able to touch 100km/h in 2nd gear. To help manage 440Nm to the front wheels which also have to steer the car, Ford has employed the use of a Quaife helical LSD. This LSD is based on the one in the original 5-speed Focus RS from the year 2002, but revised for the new 6-speed 2009 Ford Focus RS. It now has a sixth planet gear and is stronger, with a more subtle intervention and torque transfer.

    Ford Focus RS

I’m sure when you look at the RS, you’ll notice the large gaping front bumper intake. This is actually part of the cooling requirement, in fact 80% of the engine’s external cooling is thanks to this front grille aperture, even down to the mesh density. The car also gets a 25% larger radiator, anda lso has a larger 14 plate engine-mounted water-cooled oil cooler. The bonnet louvres are also there for a reason, to help idle cooling especially after a high-speed run.

At the front, Ford uses a RevoKnuckle suspension. While regular suspension knuckles are a one-piece design; RevoKnuckle has instead two separate pieces. In place of the regular, inverted ‘L’-shaped lower suspension mount, RevoKnuckle features a ‘C’-shaped mount, connected to both the wheel hub, via two arms and to the strut, which is attached at its top. Apparently this allows greater flexibility in tuning suspension geometry to avoid torque steer. This is sort of a hybrid between a MacPherson strut and double wishbone design, which is good as it is cheaper than a double wishbone design.

Of course, you have to pay for performance not only in the price tag of a car, but naturally more power will burn more fuel so the Focus RS also has a larger fuel tank at 62 liters up from 55 liters in the Focus ST.

New Facelifted Porsche 911 GT3.

    Porsche 911 GT3

The 911 GT3 has been updated and is set to make a public debut at the Geneva show in March, so Porsche has released an initial set of images for those of us hungry to check out the changes made to Porsche’s latest “track car for the road”.

The GT3 is the most powerful normally aspirated Type 997 Porsche 911, as the Turbo and the GT2 are turbocharged. The engine has been upsized to 3.8 liters and peak power is now 435hp, up 20 horses from the pre-facelift model. Porsche VarioCam is now active on both the intake and exhaust valves, as the predecessor only had it on the intake valves. 0 to 100km/h takes 4.1 seconds, if you shift the manual gearbox perfectly.

The new facelifted Type 997 Porsche 911 GT3 now has a sports-oriented variant of the Porsche Stability Management system which offers the driver the choice to deactivate Stability Control and Traction Control in separate steps. If turned off, they won’t kick in even at the most dire of circumstances, only when the driver pushes the necessary buttons to let them kick in again.

    Porsche 911 GT3

The car’s aerodynamics have been improved, and Porsche claims overall air pressure pushing down on the car is more than twice greater than the former model. Both front and rear downforce has been improved. Springs and anti-rollbars are now stiffer, and the wheels are lighter, and all of this improves handling.

Along with the improved VarioCam, the keyword for the updates to the new GT3 seem to be “variable”. The 911 GT3 now has the option of Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount (PADM) engine mountings. The PADM recognises when the driver is driving sportily and automatically makes the engine mounts harder and resistant. During normal day to day driving they remain “elastic”, which improves comfort. The front axle can be raised via the active suspension at the touch of a button. It goes up by 30mm to help the car navigate bumpy surfaces and steep gradients.

The 911 GT3 will go on sale in the UK and Ireland for £81,914 and buyers will also receive a complimentary course at the Porsche Driving Experience Centre in Silverstone.

BMW 116i Now Powered By 2.0L N46 Valvetronic.

    BMW 1-Series

BMW has phased out its N45 inline-4 engine family, currently used in the BMW 116i. The N45 is a rather basic engine compared to the rest of the BMW line-up, it doesn’t even have Valvetronic, which these days is only absent on turbocharged BMW engines. The only other application has been in the limited edition BMW 320si, which used an N45 engine with displacement increased to 2.0 liters. That one produced 173 PS at 7,000 and 200Nm at 4,250rpm, but the N45B16 in the 116i only produced 122hp at 6,000rpm and 160Nm of torque at 4,300rpm.

From this year on, the 116i will be powered by the more advanced N46, which produces the same 122hp, but torque has been upped to 185Nm between 3,000 to 4,250rpm. This is because the new engine is actually the same 2.0 liter engine that’s found in the 118i and the 120i, only with different tuning. This engine also has Valvetronic, which provides variable valve lift and operates without using a throttle plate.

This is also happening with many other BMW models. The numbers on a vehicle’s badge doesn’t necessarily indicate the displacement of the engine under the hood anymore. Alot of the x25i cars around are now running with 3.0 liter engines, tuned to produce the same power and torque as a 2.5 liter but with torque over a wider spread of RPMs, to improve driveability. This would be a problem in Malaysia because of the displacement-tied road tax (as opposed to power output or emissions tied), so expect the 325i to continue to be offered with a 2.5 liter engine for the moment.

Ferrari F60 2009 Formula One Car Officially Unveiled !

    Ferrari F60

The new Ferrari F60 is here, Ferrari’s new contender for the 2009 Formula One racing season, making Scuderia Ferrari the first team to unveil their 2009 race car, showing just how eager they are to wrestle the World title back from McLaren. The F60 name is a homage to Ferrari’s 60th consecutive season competing in the Formula One championship, which is basically right from the start, and is the only team to do so for each and every season.

    Ferrari F60

The car looks bizarre as usual, as will all the 2009 race cars, but the car’s saving grace is its sexy red colour. The odd looks are thanks to the 2009 regulations on aerodynamics. We can spot the 2009 rules on the photos - the long front wheel, a short and high rear wing, sidepod-mounted mirrors, and slick Bridgestone tyres. What’s out of sight is the Kinetic Energy Recovery System developed together with Magneti Marelli, a refined suspension system, and a new Brembo brake system.

The large front wing has a flap that is driver-adjustable to reduce the loss of front downforce when following other cars. Hopefully this will promote overtaking.

    Ferrari F60

“I am excited but also happy to take it onto the track for the first time. With all the new legislation I was expecting a different car, like 10 years ago with the huge spoilers, but I was surprised. I found the new F60 to be nice and small like an F3 car and nice-looking,” said Filipe Massa, Ferrari’s Brazilian driver.

Jaguar XF-R an M5 Killer ?

    Jaguar XF-R

We definitely don’t know if this new high-powered version of the award-winning XF can trump the BMW M5 as a driver’s car, but it’s definitely got the soon to be outgoing E60 M5 beat in the horsepower and torque department. The new Jaguar XF-R is powered by the new AJ-V8 Gen III engine that supercharges 5.0 liters of displacement in V8 configuration to produce 510 PS and 625Nm of torque.

    Jaguar XF-R

Now this is definitely less than the twin-turbo RS6, but according to our track tester Harvinder who had a go at the RS6 on Sepang recently, the Audi offering is rather pudgy on the track. What will the new Jaguar XF-R be like? Will it be both nimble and quick or will it be an autobahn cruiser designed to go in straight lines very fast? We already know it does the whole straight line thing very well as Jaguar has officially announced the XF-R as the fastest Jaguar ever, as it can reach a top speed of 225mph, which is approximately 362km/h.

    Jaguar XF-R

The top speed run was tested at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah using a Jaguar XFR prototype using a a remapped ECU, a modified air intake and exhaust system and revised supercharger settings. No internal engine components were changed and the 6-speed auto was kept standard, including the gear ratios. The standard production car will be limited to 155mph (250km/h), but you can already expect a slew of tuners who will have products to unleash a few horsepowers and Newton meters from the engine as well as get rid of the top speed limiter.

    Jaguar XF-R

The Jaguar XFR goes from 0 to 100km.h in 4.9 seconds, but more importantly it has some decent overtaking abilities as 80km/h to 110km/h acceleration time only takes 1.9 seconds. The R car is equipped with a quicker steering rack, uprated brakes, and a new electronic Active Differential.

    2009 Kawasaki KLX450R

Kawi knows how to make a bike look good and in this case it made all efforts so that it will. As a result, aggressive lines are all over the place, from headlight to the rear fender and everything in between.

Also inspiring on the KX450 on the design chapter, the KLX is easily distinguishable as it is a bit lower on the suspensions. But still, it features 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels that together with the suspensions soak up bumps easily so that the bike won’t just look good, but do the job properly too.

Also, proof of its racing inspirations are the motocross-like side panels, side number plates and mudguards. The pass from functional to beautiful is smoothly achieved, making the compact engine almost look like part of the bodywork.

Green team stays true to its color of choice and all off-roaders are pained in Lime Green and covered in stylish Kawasaki decals.

    CRF70F

In 2009, Japanese 450cc off-road bikes are priced at $7,499. Not exactly a rule, but more of a “let the customer decide” kind of situation, you’ve seen it at the 2009 Yamaha WR450F and now in the case of the Kawasaki KLX450R. Honda hasn’t yet launched the 2009 off-road line-up so we’ll better keep it out of this.

    7. 1986 Honda XR80R

    Conclusion

Kawasaki has never before achieved such levels of performance in the case of an off-road bike than in the case of the KLX450R, and this can only stand as a new beginning for them on the trails.

Aggressive and packed with racing features that backs it up, this is without a question, one awesome bang for the buck, not matter the bike you compare it with.Source URL: http://danger-radioactive.blogspot.com/2009/01/

KLX450R 2009

    2. 2009 Kawasaki KLX450R
    2009 Kawasaki KLX450R

For 2009, the KLX450R doesn’t drift too far away from its racing cousin as this last provides the engine and chassis, giving this off-roader a racing attitude despite its clean look. The 449cc four-stroke, DOHC, four-valve single powerplant was tuned to deliver the best of it at all rpm levels, especially at the bottom of the rev range. So we’re dealing with a torquey little monster. This allows the KLX450R to be exploited hard in any environments and never disappoint.

Even more, the comfort of a push-button electric starting (or kick-starter for the nostalgics) makes the easiest thing out of starting the four-stroke engine. Still, engine starts are ensured by starter motor and compact, high-output battery.

Engineering smart choices such as the steel exhaust valves and a reservoir tank equipped radiator will keep you on the KLX for a very long time. But what will first attract you will be the impressive low and mid-range rpm as a result of cam lift and timing and a beefy flywheel.

The transmission is a five-speed unit, the one considered the most appropriate for this engine. No errors where made there as the gearbox has a gear for every situation, rough or smooth.

Having sorted out the engine and tranny, Kawasaki people could now concentrate on, I won’t call it improving comfort, but making the ride less harsh then before. They rely on the Kayaba AOS inverted fork to provide good damping and also to improve steering as their new system which implies the oil and air to be kept in separate chambers, helps taking the thing easily through corners. At the rear end, the UNI-Trak system with shock absorber featuring both high-speed and low-speed compression damping, keep the KLX well under control.

Characteristic to any modern off-road bike is the digital instrument cluster, which in this case features speedometer, dual tripmeter, odometer and clock, and headlight (a 35-watt unit in this case).

    History

Being brand new for 2008, the 2009 model couldn’t bring many improvements, but if you’re thinking that this bike hasn’t experienced the test of time, we must say that its mechanics did. As it is powered by the KX450 engine, and that’s on the scene for more than a while, you can definitely say that this bike has got the public’s running in.

Honda is up for the challenge with the 2008 CRF450X, a Baja champion that never misses a chance to show off its awesome features. Now, it will have to do it against the KLX, something that doesn’t come easy, even though the CRF has been around for a while. Powered by the race-inspired 449cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder Unicam four-stroke engine and being equipped with the Honda Progressive Steering Damper, the Red trails machine establishes a great balance between power and handling finesse, which is not easy at all. Price tag is $7,399.

    1. 2009 Yamaha WR450F
    2009 Yamaha WR450F

A step further than the Honda (in this case, at least), Yamaha launches the 2009 off-road lineup with the WR450F in the front line. It goes straight against the Honda and Kawasaki relying on its 449cc liquid-cooled DOHC four-stroke; five-titanium valves engine. A fierce opponent, the WR is refinement itself when it comes to the frame and suspensions, resulting into an impressive enduro motorcycle. MSRP is $7,499.

Mika Kallio and KTM: A farewell between friends
After six years of successful partnership that yielded 12 race victories and 33 podium finishes, KTM rider Mika Kallio and his team will say good-bye at the end of this racing season.

But even though the 25-year-old Finn is joining another manufacturer as he moves to the MotoGP class, it is a farewell between good friends.

“Mika has been under our wings from the beginnings of his Grand Prix career. We’ve moved up through the ranks as a team and celebrated our first victories together. We fought for the world titles in both the 125 cc and 250 cc class and it was a great and exciting time,” says KTM CEO Stefan Pierer. “Mika is an outstanding talent in this sport and we always said that we would support him all the way, not only with our bikes but also once he found a good opportunity to move to the MotoGP category. The time has now come. It will be exciting to watch him racing in the future and we all wish him the best of luck.”

Kallio now to face the ultimate challenge
Competing in the highest category of motorcycle racing is every rider’s dream but Kallio did not take his decision lightly. “The MotoGP class is the ultimate challenge, and I took this chance after talking to my team and to KTM, and after carefully considering all options. We’ve won many races, we’ve been serious title contenders in both the 125 and the 250 class and there is not much more I would be able to prove if I hung in for another year,” says Kallio. “I will always remember the great times we had together and our early success when we surprised the paddock and the fans in both categories.”

“Under normal circumstances, I would have been able to follow the front runners for sure, but unfortunately, I had a little problem with the engine so I couldn’t fight for the podium today. But even though I am still proud of what we achieved together. We built this bike as a team, and the milestones and memories are unforgettable. To celebrate victory with KTM at my home race in Motegi in two years ago was one of the great highlights of my career and for our young team. So was our double victory at the German Sachsenring last year, which is kind of a home race for KTM. All in all, we celebrated four victories and had a great time together, and I want to thank my team, the factory and our sponsors for their support and trust. I will always regard these three years with KTM as a very special time!”

Aoyama fifth in KTM’s final 250 cc GP in Valencia; Kallio off on final lap
Red Bull KTM factory rider Hiroshi Aoyama put in a brave and determined ride to finish fifth in Sunday’s 250 cc GP in Valencia to conclude a proud chapter in road racing history for the orange bikes “Made in Austria”.

Teammate Mika Kallio was not so lucky. After putting in a do-or-die dash for final victory in a display of riding that illustrated the determination, skill and passion of the Finnish rider, Kallio in hot pursuit of leader Marco Simoncelli, crashed out of second position only a few corners from the finish line. He got back on the bike and crossed the finish line in eleventh place. Kallio was treated for abrasions on the fourth finger of his left hand in the medical centre but luckily, he escaped without any other injuries.

Even though Aoyama lost engine power early on in the race due to a small problem on one of the two cylinders, the 27-year-old Japanese rider pushed his bike to the limit all along the way, and managed to defend his strong position in the second group of riders. Repsol KTM rider Julian Simon had, together with Kallio, dominated the race in the early stages, swapping the lead back and forth between them. But as the race progressed Simon dropped back through the order and finally was forced to retire in front of his home crowd when his engine started to lose water and overheated.
